Managing Successful Programmes Overview
Programme Management is a vital component in the delivery of strategic / business initiative and change. Delivering the right benefits and outcomes from change requires a structured framework to co-ordinate, communicate, align, manage and control the activities involved.
Programme Management provides this framework through organisation, processes, inputs, outputs and a focus on strategic thinking.
MSP 5th edition is an established best practice programme management framework, designed to align programmes and projects to organizational strategy and enable enterprise agility. MSP focuses on the delivery of outcomes of benefit, while mitigating risk and actively engaging stakeholders.
MSP is a globally recognised programme management methodology from AXELOS Limited who provide a range of best management practice guides, including PRINCE2, PRINCE2 Agile, MoP and P3O.
The courses are designed as followed:
Foundation – for individuals who:
- Are interested in learning how to manage multiple projects and programmes successfully.
- Wish to gain a greater understanding of the MSP guidance to work more effectively in large scale project or programme environments.
Practitioner - for project, programme and business change managers who want to apply the MSP framework to real-life scenarios.
FOUNDATION
The Foundation course introduces the MSP method and terminology to ensure participants understand the MSP guidance well enough to work in a team to deliver or manage a programme within an environment supporting MSP.
Participation will enable you to:
- Improve your mastery of best practice programme management.
- Establish appropriate programme governance structures that effectively control the work involved, thereby ensuring the creation of value.
- Design programmes using incremental cycles that allow for multimodal delivery.
- Effectively engage stakeholders by providing a clear vision and full transparency around the achievement of programme objectives and expected benefits.
PRACTITIONER
The Practitioner course prepares participants to take and pass the MSP Practitioner Exam.
The Practitioner exam is intended to assess whether the candidate can demonstrate sufficient ability to apply and tailor the MSP programme management.
A successful Practitioner candidate should, with suitable direction, be able to start applying the framework to a real programme but may not be sufficiently skilled to do this appropriately for all situations. Their individual programme management expertise, the complexity of the programme, and the support provided for the use of MSP in their work environment will all be factors that impact what the practitioner can achieve.
The course includes review, consolidation of concepts and exam questions for the Practitioner level certification. Please note the Practitioner course is an exam preparation course and focuses on the application of MSP to prepare candidates for the Practitioner examination.
KEY TOPICS
Participants will be provided with in-depth knowledge of:
- The MSP principles, which are continuously applied to achieve value from programme management.
- The MSP themes, which provide the governance required to ensure the programme is aligned to the principles.
- The MSP processes, which enable you to manage a programme in an orderly, yet flexible and adaptable way.
Comprehensive preparation for certification exams is also provided.

FOUNDATION
The Foundation course includes the MSP Foundation online exam which consists of:
- 60 multiple choice questions
- 60% pass mark
- 1-hour duration
- Closed book
PRACTITIONER
The Practitioner course includes the MSP Practitioner online examination and consists of:
- Multiple choice questions, based on a programme scenario
- 58 questions per paper (including 6 matching questions worth 3 marks each), 70 marks available in total
- 60% pass mark
- 2.5 hours’ duration
- Open book (Managing Successful Programmes 5th Edition guide only)
SITTING YOUR EXAM
On the last day of your course you will receive an invitation to book your online proctored exam directly with PeopleCert. You have 6 months to schedule and sit your exam online. Please check the requirements here when making your booking.
Your certification will need to be renewed within three years of its original certification date. Please refer to PeopleCert for more information.
MyAxelos MEMBERSHIP
All candidates who pass the MSP exam are eligible to claim 1 month’s free access to MyAxelos Membership.
Candidates access the free membership through the results page on the PeopleCert candidate portal.
PeopleCert administers the MSP examination scheme. PM-Partners is an accredited partner of PeopleCert (Partner ID: 3800).
Take2 Re-sit Exam Option
PeopleCert provide you with the opportunity to sit your exam knowing that if the outcome is not what you expected, you could have another attempt, at a fraction of the exam price.

PDUs
Participants who have been awarded the Project Management Professional (PMP) credential by the Project Management Institute (PMI) are eligible to earn PDUs for their participation in these courses as follows:
Foundation
- Weekday / virtual (3 days): 21 PDUs (15 Ways of Working, 3 Business Acumen and 3 Power Skills)
- Weekend (2 days): 18 PDUs (14 Ways of Working, 2 Business Acumen and 2 Power Skills)
Practitioner
- All courses (2 days): 14 PDUs (12 Ways of Working, 1 Business Acumen and 1 Power Skills)
CPDs
Participants holding any of the Project Management accreditations (CPPP/ CPPM/CPPD) are eligible to earn CPDs as follows:
Foundation
- Weekday / virtual (3 days): 20 CPDs
- Weekend (2 days): 20 CPDs
Practitioner
- All courses (2 days): 20 CPDs
FOUNDATION
To gain the most benefit from participation in this course, it is recommended that participants have a minimum of two years project management experience.
There is no pre-course work for this course.
PRACTITIONER
To be eligible to sit the MSP Practitioner exam, participants must have attended the Foundation course and obtained a pass in the MSP Foundation exam (5th Edition).
It is a requirement that participants familiarise themselves with this material before commencing this course.
WHERE IS THE TRAINING VENUE LOCATED?
Sydney courses are held at 45 Clarence Street, Sydney.
Melbourne courses are held at 123 Queen Street, Melbourne.

IS THIS A CERTIFIED COURSE?
Yes. The exam for this course is to be undertaken online, after the course. Upon passing the exam you will be certified.

Yes. The exam fee is included in the course cost.
Note: You must have completed and passed the Foundation exam as a prerequisite to sitting the Practitioner exam.
